The BBC has confirmed there will be no Doctor Who Christmas special in 2026, and that showrunner Russell T. Davies and producer Bad Wolf are leaving the series. Their departures, part of the team that returned the show in 2021, clear the way for a broader reshuffle rather than a simple scheduling change.

The broadcaster says it will put the series out to a competitive tender this year, allowing BBC Studios or an outside producer to reinvent the Time Lord with a new creative team and showrunner. The corporation framed the move as a long-term investment and noted an animated Doctor Who series remains in production, while stopping short of giving a firm return date for live-action episodes.

The change follows an unusually bruising run for the revival: Disney exited last year as co-producer after a 26-episode deal, Ncuti Gatwa stepped down after one of the shortest tenures as the Doctor, and ratings slipped enough to raise existential questions.
