I wasn’t much of a modern Call of Duty player until 2022, when I sank hundreds of hours into DMZ and found one of the most underrated extraction shooters around. It leaned into PvE while sprinkling in PvP moments, which made exploration and emergent encounters feel rewarding rather than punishing—something I’d long wanted from the genre after games like Hunt: Showdown.

The original DMZ thrived on a huge Al Mazrah map full of locked buildings, loot rooms, vehicles, events and boss encounters. Team mechanics let you gamble on betrayal or formally join other squads to tackle tougher content, and indoor modes like the Koschei Complex and Building 21 rewarded preparation: the latter required a special keycard for a single, high-stakes run against bosses such as the grenade-launcher-wielding Velikan, whose defeat granted a powerful weapon.

DMZ 2.0 will arrive as a full mode with Modern Warfare 4 rather than a beta, and the reveal and developer deep dive outlined several meaningful changes.
