Disney's string of live-action remakes has produced mixed results in recent years. 2025's Lilo & Stitch became one of the studio's biggest recent hits, crossing the $1 billion mark globally and earning largely positive reviews, while 2025's Snow White and 2023's The Little Mermaid struggled to varying degrees.

The studio is now preparing a live-action remake of 2016's Moana for release in Jul. 2026. Catherine Laga'aia will take over the title role from original voice actor Auli'i Cravalho, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson returns as Maui.

Disney first shared a trailer in March 2026 that largely focused on Moana and Maui's first meeting. The studio followed that with a second full trailer to mark the start of ticket sales, revealing more of the story.

The new trailer offers a deeper look at the central characters, centering on Laga'aia's Moana and Johnson's Maui, and includes striking moments such as Tamatoa holding Moana in the footage.
