Disney Is Preparing to Say Goodbye to Hulu as Streaming Enters a New Era

For the last decade streaming taught viewers to use many different apps: there was a Netflix corner and a Disney+ corner, alongside Hulu, HBO Max, Paramount Plus and others. That brand-driven era is shifting. Disney’s push to fold Hulu into Disney+ suggests the future of streaming will center on unified ecosystems rather than standalone services.

Disney has not shut down Hulu and the standalone app remains available, but recent moves make the split harder to justify. Users can link profiles and bring over Hulu watch histories, recommendations, and watchlists into Disney+, and Hulu already has a dedicated section inside Disney+.

Additional features, including live TV options, are expected to migrate over time. The strategy reflects a broader industry change: platforms now aim to keep viewers inside a single ecosystem. Cross-discovery can extend subscriptions and boost engagement, and consolidation trims the costs of maintaining multiple apps and development pipelines.
