I decluttered my attic to create a feminine sanctuary

I have three sons, and while I enjoy life as a boy-mom — with superheroes, backyard battles, and movie nights fueled by "Star Wars" and "The Lord of the Rings" — I often feel like the odd woman out at the family table. Their shared language and rhythms reminded me I needed a space of my own to ask who I am as a woman and to hear my inner voice again.

I first tried a home office in 2019, but when my husband began working from home it became his workspace. A living-room desk invited constant interruption from family and pets, so I turned my attention upward to the attic: a partly finished room full of boxes and cast-offs left from the rush of moving in while seven months pregnant.

I decluttered with a Kaizen mantra — one stone at a time. I sorted through every box, gifting usable things to Goodwill, photographing sentimental items to preserve memory, and tossing toddler-sized sneakers into a big Hefty bag. It took weeks, but the attic gradually emptied and the hill of stuff became a clean, quiet room.
