Death of a Salesman dominates Tonys as Lesley Manville and John Lithgow win
A stripped-back take on Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman dominated this year’s Tonys, winning six awards and becoming the most awarded play revival in the ceremony’s history. Death of a Salesman was named best revival of a play, with director Joe Mantello saying the story “still talks to us through time”.
Nathan Lane accepted the award on behalf of the cast and called it a play that “continues to teach us who we are as humans and Americans”. Laurie Metcalf won her third Tony as best featured actress in a play, beating June Squibb and Aya Cash. The play has previously won best play in 1949 and best revival in 1984, 1999 and 2012.
Lesley Manville took the leading actress in a play award for the Broadway transfer of Oedipus, fending off Rose Byrne and Carrie Coon; she noted on stage, “I’m a bit overwhelmed, it was my first time on Broadway so this is such a big deal.” John Lithgow won best leading actor in a play for his role in Giant, defeating Nathan Lane, Mark Strong and Daniel Radcliffe.
