Daniel Craig Admitted He Took Tomb Raider for the 'Money'
Twenty-five years ago, Daniel Craig stood next to Angelina Jolie in a leather jacket, doing an American accent as a treasure-hunting rival named Alex West in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. He has been candid about why he accepted the part: when asked what drew him to the role, his answer was simple—"Money!" Craig did not leave it at a one-word reply.
He explained that he enjoys going to the cinema with popcorn, nachos and hot dogs, and saw Tomb Raider as an opportunity to be part of a big Hollywood movie—"a good movie for what it was," even if that kind of film did not excite him. The film was a commercial success, earning $274.7 million worldwide on a $115 million budget, debuting at number one with a $48.2 million opening weekend and standing for years as the highest-grossing video game adaptation.
Still, when a sequel was offered he turned it down, reportedly joking there are only so many ways to look surprised at things blowing up.
