Cuphead devs announce hand-animated successor and 8-bit spin-off
Nearly four years after the hand-drawn platformer released its final expansion, The Delicious Last Course, developer Studio MDHR returned with two new projects unveiled during Summer Game Fest 2026. The first is described as a true successor to Cuphead. The trailer, led by a puppet news anchor, says the hand-animated game will "take Cuphead and friends on a fresh, exciting adventure." The project is in early stages and no gameplay was shown; the anchor promises the team will reveal more when the time is right.
The second project, Mighty Cuphead Adventure, comes from a small team within the studio and is billed as "a love letter to the era that brought us into world of video games." A brief trailer presents an 8-bit platformer that stars familiar faces while adopting an entirely new visual style from Cuphead’s hand-drawn aesthetic, with Studio MDHR’s hallmark platforming gameplay remaining intact.
Mighty Cuphead Adventure will appear on modern platforms, and Studio MDHR plans a physical cartridge for the Sega Master System.
