The Netherlands were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their opening World Cup game in Dallas after conceding a late equaliser. Second-half strikes from Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville put the Oranje ahead twice, but Japan responded on each occasion. Donyell Malen came close early on, with Zion Suzuki tipping his effort over the bar, and the first half offered few clear chances as both teams played cautiously.

After the break Van Dijk rose highest to head in from Ryan Gravenberch's cross, only for Keito Nakamura to level within seven minutes when his low shot deflected off Jan Paul van Hecke. Summerville then curled a low effort in off the post to regain the lead, and despite chances at both ends it was Koki Ogawa's 89th-minute header, deflected off Daichi Kamada, that made it 2-2.

GOAL published player ratings from Dallas, giving Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville 7/10 while Bart Verbruggen was marked 5/10.
