Critical Role Campaign 4 sees first player character death
Brennan Lee Mulligan made clear from the start of Campaign 4 that he would not pull punches as Dungeon Master. Homebrewed rules, new death mechanics and an Aramán that isn’t level‑scaled have raised the stakes, and that lethality was on full display in episode 30, "Here in the Dark." This contains major spoilers for the episode.
Earlier in the arc Occtis Tachonis survived what appeared to be a fatal ambush and was raised as a Hollowed One, but many other player characters had only narrowly escaped death across more than 20 episodes. One group, Team Bird‑Watching — Thimble, Occtis, Sir Julien Davinos, Teor Pridesire and Teor’s brother Cyd — were sent into Obrimus Manor to rescue Mara the Wing and recover a gem that could cure Julien’s sister Alba.
By the end of episode 29 the team was badly wounded and vulnerable to the Tenebral Reaches connected to the manor. Splitting the party proved costly. Teor and Cyd stumbled into a room containing the necromantic remains of Raimond Davinos and were overwhelmed by zombies.
