Congress Reaches Deal on Housing Bill With CBDC Ban
The House and Senate have reached a deal to move forward with a housing bill that includes a ban on the Federal Reserve creating a central bank digital currency until 2030. A bipartisan group of House and Senate leaders released an updated version of the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, which also aims to address housing affordability and prevents institutional investors from buying existing single-family homes to rent out.
The CBDC ban was part of the Senate-passed bill in March and followed a House version that passed with strong support in May. The Senate added further amendments that will be put before the House for a final vote, and Republican leaders plan to bring the bill up after the House returns from recess on June 23.
The measure is expected to move quickly and would represent a win for Republicans who have pushed similar bans after standalone bills stalled.
