Coinbase Tool Lets AI Agents Trade Crypto, Make Payments
Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents, a tool that lets AI models such as ChatGPT and Claude connect with a user’s exchange account to make trades or execute strategies on their behalf. The agents can also make payments using Coinbase’s AI payments protocol x402, enabling bots to pay for data services used to gather information for trading strategies and to support the high-frequency microtransactions agents typically carry out.
The tool is available via a model context protocol (MCP) and a command-line interface for developers. Alongside the agent platform, Coinbase introduced Coinbase Advisor, an AI agent integrated into its app that the company says is a US Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission-registered financial adviser able to give guidance.
Coinbase highlighted use cases such as dollar-cost averaging into ETH by pulling 30 days of hourly price data, identifying historically low times, and scheduling recurring buys. Not all results with AI agents have been positive.
