Cillian Murphy Shines in Tense WWII Thriller Anthropoid
Anthropoid dramatizes Operation Anthropoid, the Czechoslovak and British plot to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, and remains one of the more overlooked World War II films. Rather than staging sweeping battles, the film centers on a small, dangerous mission carried out by resistance fighters operating in Prague.
Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan play Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, two former soldiers sent back to carry out the killing. The movie makes the stakes clear: success could bring swift, deadly reprisals and the regime would simply replace the man they kill, a dilemma that keeps tension taut throughout.
Murphy gives a restrained, intense performance, conveying the cold precision and emotional burden of a man leading a mission that could cost an entire city everything. Dornan and the ensemble portray ordinary people forced into extraordinary choices, grounding the story in fear, uncertainty and courage.
