Christian Eriksen collapses again during Denmark friendly, later walked off
Christian Eriksen collapsed again almost exactly five years after his dramatic Euro 2021 incident. The 34-year-old VfL Wolfsburg midfielder went down in the 65th minute of Sunday’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense; TV footage showed him clutching his chest before falling, medical staff ran on and team-mates formed a screen, and he later walked to the ambulance unaided.
The Danish Football Association said he was doing well and that the implanted defibrillator appears to have worked. Team doctor Morten Boesen said, "Christian is fine and walked off the pitch under his own steam. As far as I can see, the pacemaker is working as it should." He added that Eriksen "was out of it for a short while, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were able to make contact with him straight away." Memories of Eriksen’s collapse on 12 June 2021 in Copenhagen were vivid: during a Euro group match against Finland he suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated.
