Long before he became an Academy Award-winner and the Dark Knight, Christian Bale starred in Equilibrium, a 2002 sci-fi thriller written and directed by Kurt Wimmer. The cast includes Emily Watson, Angus Macfadyen, Taye Diggs and Sean Bean, and the film is now available to stream free on Pluto TV.

Set in a future where a totalitarian regime has outlawed emotion, Bale plays government agent John Preston, tasked with destroying those who resist. When Preston misses a dose of Prozium, the mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, he turns his skills against the system.

The film introduced a stylized fighting method known as 'gun kata' and often draws comparisons to George Orwell's 1984 and The Matrix; Sean Bean's character dies. Equilibrium was divisive on release, earning 40% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $5.3 million against a $20 million budget.
