California led the nation in out-migration, with an estimated 229,077 people leaving for other states from July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2025, and nearly 700,000 departures between 2022 and 2023. Rising wildfire risk, an affordability squeeze, and proposed taxes that prompted some very wealthy residents to leave have all been cited as drivers.

Celebrities have followed the broader trend, seeking privacy, lower taxes, cheaper housing, or a quieter life. Some moved to other US states such as Florida, Texas, and New York, while others relocated abroad.
