CBOE Eyes Crypto Perpetual Futures After CFTC Shift
CBOE is exploring converting its continuous Bitcoin and Ether futures into perpetual futures after the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved cryptocurrency perpetuals for prediction market Kalshi and outlined a regulatory pathway for other registered exchanges.
Rob Hocking, the exchange’s global head of derivatives, said the conversion is being considered but offered no timeline or explanation of potential benefits. CBOE launched its continuous BTC and ETH futures last December, with contracts that can expire up to a decade from now.
Perpetual futures, often called perps, were popularized by BitMEX and have become the dominant product in crypto derivatives. Unlike traditional futures, perps have no expiration date, letting traders hold leveraged positions indefinitely while funding payments keep prices aligned with the underlying asset.
