Carragher: Liverpool missed a massive trick by letting Xabi Alonso go
Jamie Carragher has questioned Liverpool’s managerial direction after the surprise dismissal of Arne Slot. Slot, who won the Premier League in his first season but finished fifth in his second, was sacked over the weekend, a move that has drawn scrutiny because Xabi Alonso had been available earlier in the year.
Carragher said he struggled to understand why sporting director Richard Hughes did not prioritise Alonso if there were doubts over Slot’s future. "I would have changed him (Slot) for Xabi Alonso. As soon as he went to Chelsea, I was thinking that I would keep Slot," he explained.
"When I was thinking about Alonso, it was also because he got the best out of Florian Wirtz. If you were going to change it, why was it not for Alonso? He also raised tactical concerns about the possible appointment of Andoni Iraola, who is known for a relentless, high-pressing style.
