FLAG STOLEN. FLAG DROPPED. FLAG STOLEN. FLAG DROPPED. Capture the flag has been a multiplayer staple for decades, first popularized by the Threewave CTF mod for Quake by Dave "Zoid" Kirsch. The announcer’s frequent updates could be tedious, but they now trigger nothing but nostalgia.

Two teams, two flags, two bases. CTF blends casual chaos and coordinated competition: dramatic flag runs, stubborn defenses, and the unforgettable image of a flag dropped mere feet from home. Unlike some objective modes, carrying a flag takes intention, and a single fearless player or a small splinter group can turn a disorganized lobby into a clutch victory.

The mode is rarer now. CTF came from arena shooters, a style largely out of favor, while modern multiplayer tends to be built around single, purpose-driven modes. Hero shooters, extraction games, and battle royales offer less room for it.
