Captain Holt's Line in Brooklyn Nine-Nine's 'Halloween IV' Still Disturbs

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is designed to be funny, even as it borrows the trappings of a police procedural. The show often leans into darker themes while keeping the mood light, and the Halloween heists have become one of its signature traditions.

In Season 4's heist, Captain Holt escalates a playful rivalry with an unexpectedly graphic threat: "I will slit you both open from mouth to anus and wear you like jackets." The line lands as shock value, and Jake quickly moves the scene back toward comedy by joking that the threat turns him on a little.

What makes the moment linger is Holt's deadpan delivery. Surrounded by cartoonish performances, his stoicism strips the line of the usual insincere wink, so it reads momentarily like a genuine menace. The sentence is so starkly out of place in a 21-minute sitcom that it becomes darkly funny, but the laughter it produces carries a trace of unease.
