Cape Verde's World Cup run delights diaspora community in UK
For as long as she can remember, 13-year-old Lauryn struggled to find a map that included Cape Verde. "Seeing our country shown across the world at the World Cup makes me feel incredibly proud," she says, after the tiny African island nation — known as Cabo Verde to the diaspora — produced a historic run at its first ever World Cup.
The islands, located about 370 miles off the coast of mainland Africa and home to just over 500,000 people, have defied expectations and held their own against the tournament’s leading teams. Before the opening match many social posts gave Cape Verde just a 1% chance of winning, but that changed after the goalkeeper’s performance in the draw with Spain.
