A week removed from Summer Game Fest, a behind-closed-doors demo of Onimusha: Way of the Sword stayed with me. It took place slightly later in the game and showed one of the open areas within Kyoto. The swordplay stood out: slices and stabs with slow, bone-splitting followthrough, blades that clash, drag, deflect and spark.

Even so, the demo felt too easy. Playing on Action mode, rank-and-file Genma went down quickly, attacked infrequently and rarely forced me to counter; only a many-armed boss presented a real challenge. Director Satoru Nihei said the demo sits early in the game and that Musashi in those builds comes fitted with many skills not available at the start.

The Los Angeles build also included button reminders over enemies that won't appear in the final version, and Capcom increased Musashi's abilities in demos so players could sample the full range of action.
