Canada produced a dominant 6-0 win over Qatar at BC Place, before a crowd of 52,497, delivering the country's first-ever victory at a men's World Cup. Jonathan David's hat-trick led the celebration of the team's progress, but the occasion was marred by a horror leg injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné in the second half.

The home fans set the tone with a rousing O Canada as Jesse Marsch's side kept possession high and pinned Qatar back early. Cyle Larin opened the scoring after Ali Ahmed’s corner ricocheted around the box, and David later struck a volley before half-time. Tajon Buchanan was then taken down by Homam Ahmed and, after VAR review, the Qatar left-back received a straight red card.

In the 51st minute Koné was hurt when Assim Madibo clattered into the back of his lower left leg; what began as a yellow was upgraded to a red and Qatar were reduced to nine men.
