Canada accused of flouting international law over Thomas Partey visa ban
Ghana’s government has criticised Canadian authorities after midfielder Thomas Partey was denied entry to Canada while facing legal proceedings over rape charges. Partey, expected to lead Ghana in their World Cup opener against Panama, remains at the team's base camp in Boston following a visa rejection linked to the allegations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the decision 'high-handed and extremely unfair,' saying reliance on unproven charges in the absence of a judicial determination raises questions of fairness and proportionality. The ministry said Ghana is pursuing active diplomatic engagements with the relevant Canadian authorities.
Sports Minister Kofi Adams has defended the 33-year-old and urged Canadian authorities to review the decision through 'the appropriate channels.' He said: 'If any Ghanaian is touched anywhere, we will not keep quiet over it.
