Anthony Head died on June 5 at the age of 72, his daughters Emily and Daisy said, citing complications from pneumonia. They described it as "an honour and a privilege to be his daughters" and added that he will be "missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in." Head became known worldwide for his role as Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, serving as a series regular for the first five seasons and returning in a recurring capacity for Seasons 6 and 7.

His character anchored much of the show’s emotional core, protecting Buffy while bringing a dark edge, wit and, on occasion, his musical background to the series. Many of his Buffy co-stars paid tribute on social media. Sarah Michelle Gellar opened with the line "Tell Giles I have figured it out and I'm ok," while admitting she was not ok and calling herself "the lucky one," thanking his daughters for sharing their father.
