Directed by Richard Linklater, Boyhood follows Mason Evans (Ellar Coltrane) as he grows from a six-year-old into an 18-year-old college freshman. The film was shot intermittently over 12 years, with Linklater gathering the cast for a few weeks each year to catch up with Mason and his family.

Coltrane was seven when filming began in 2002 and 19 when it wrapped in 2013. The film is returning to participating theaters to mark its 12-year anniversary. Linklater said Independent Film Company had previously asked about a tenth-anniversary re-release but he "wasn’t in the mood, and I think I was busy," and "I just kicked the can, but the idea was, hey, let's do a 12 year." Boyhood will play in participating theaters, including Alamo Drafthouse locations, on Jul.

31, 2026, and the cast and creators will reunite in Austin for a one-night-only event hosted by the Austin Film Society on July 18 featuring a red carpet premiere, a special screening, and a live Q&A; Linklater, Hawke, Arquette, and Coltrane will attend.
