Lionsgate confirmed via a surprise Instagram announcement that a new Blair Witch Project film will open in theaters on Sept. 26, 2027. Development ramped up in 2024 under Blumhouse and Lionsgate after another installment had reportedly been in the works as early as 2022.

The project reunites 1999 creators Ed Sánchez and Daniel Myrick as executive producers and brings back original cast members Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard. Jason Blum and James Wan produce under Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. YouTuber Dylan Clark will direct; he is best known for his horror shorts Story Time and Portrait of God and is set to adapt both into full-length features.

It remains unclear whether the new film will adopt the original's documentary-style found-footage approach or a more traditional narrative. The original 1999 Blair Witch Project was largely improvised, shot in a documentary style, and promoted with an early internet campaign that presented fake police and news reports as evidence.
