Estranged siblings Byron (Ashley Thomas) and Benny (Adrienne Warren) must follow their mother's will: listen to the audio recordings she left and share the traditional black cake. Eleanor (Chipo Chung) hides secrets that push her children to confront their own issues as they work to unravel the truth.

Eleanor's recordings send the narrative back to 1960s Jamaica and reveal her real name as Covey (Mia Isaac). Her father arranges a marriage to local crime boss Clarence "Little Man" Henry (Anthony Mark Barrow); at the wedding reception Little Man is poisoned and Covey becomes the main suspect.
