Paul Verhoeven's Black Book runs 145 minutes and follows Rachel Stein, a German-Jewish singer hiding in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. After her family is ambushed and she becomes the sole survivor, Rachel adopts the alias Ellis de Vries, joins the resistance and is tasked with infiltrating Nazi circles by seducing Gestapo commander Hauptsturmführer Ludwig Müntze (Sebastian Koch).

The cast also includes Carice van Houten and Michiel Huisman. The film paints a detailed picture of wartime anti-Semitism and the Dutch Resistance, refusing simple hero-villain labels. It confronts harsh realities—including a scene in which a naked Rachel is tortured and has fecal matter poured on her after some Dutch villagers wrongly suspect her of collaboration—while occasionally trading subtlety for bluntness.

Black Book leans into characterization and moral complication rather than pure spectacle.
