Crypto exchange BitMEX has removed chief executive Stephan Lutz, chief financial officer Ina Steiner and chief growth officer Raphael Polansky. Peter Wilkinson, the firm’s former global general counsel and chief operating officer, has taken over as CEO, a change highlighted in recent LinkedIn posts.

BitMEX was co-founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed. In 2020 the exchange was alleged to have failed to implement adequate anti-money-laundering measures and later pleaded guilty to the charges; Hayes, Delo and Reed resigned shortly after U.S.

criminal charges were brought. The firm has been looking for a buyer and is presumably aiming to streamline costs and appear more attractive to prospective purchasers as an ongoing depression in digital asset prices weighs on the crypto industry. Lutz became CEO during the last downturn in 2022, succeeding Alexander Hoeptner, who took the role in early 2021 when the founders stepped down.
