Billy Gilmour ruled out of World Cup after Hampden injury
Scotland's World Cup preparations suffered a major blow after Napoli midfielder Billy Gilmour was ruled out of the tournament following a serious knee injury in the final send-off win over Curaçao. The 24-year-old went to the ground with no one around him toward the end of the first half, received treatment and was unable to continue.
Steve Clarke confirmed Gilmour was sent for medical imaging to determine the extent of the damage, and the Scottish Football Association stated: "We regret to announce that the knee injury sustained by Billy Gilmour in today's win over Curaçao will rule him out of participation in FIFA World Cup 2026." The statement added that he will return to SSC Napoli to commence rehabilitation.
Clarke said: "I am devastated for Billy because he has been an integral part of our World Cup qualifying campaign.
