Marcelo Bielsa criticised his Uruguay side after a 2-2 draw with Cape Verde that leaves their World Cup hopes in doubt. The result, following an earlier draw with Saudi Arabia, means Uruguay must beat Spain in their final group game to guarantee progression. Cape Verde took the lead through Kevin Pina in the 21st minute, before Uruguay levelled via Ronald Araujo and Agustin Canobbio just before half-time.

Defensive fragility returned in the second half when Mathías Olivera’s misplaced pass allowed Helio Varela to equalise in the 61st minute. Bielsa described the performance as “highly disorganised,” adding that his team had exposed itself to conceding on the break: “We could have won the match and we also could have lost the match.

Undoubtedly, Uruguay is a better squad than Cape Verde. But this has to be shown.” He said Uruguay face a “gargantuan challenge” against Spain and confirmed Araujo will not return from injury in time for that game.
