From go karts to Beyblades: the best toys and gifts for six-year-olds
Shopping for six-year-olds can feel deceptively simple — they’ll love almost anything you give them — yet finding something that truly lasts is harder. Play at this age supports reading, curiosity, longer focus spans and social skills; the best gifts capture imagination and keep children coming back day after day.
Only toys that held sustained and repeated interest passed the test. I’m an experienced toy-tester who has worked in children’s publishing and as a teaching assistant, and I also tested with a band of six-year-olds in my living room to see what held attention and repeated play.
Certain craft and construction toys stood out. Aquabeads absorbed testers for hours as they followed patterns, spritzed their designs and returned to projects later; Flip 7 offers quick, decision-making play that sneaks in mental maths; and a Lego City passenger plane gave children a satisfying build and long-lasting roleplay with multiple mini-figures.
