Best mattresses for 2026: 14 tested picks including Otty, Simba and Ikea
A good mattress can transform sleep. Today’s models promise comfort, support and cooling: pocket springs remain common, but hybrids that combine springs and memory foam now compete strongly. Many of the trendiest brands sell bed-in-a-box models without showrooms, so generous trial periods help — but you’re still buying blind, which is why I tested them myself.
I invited a panel of family members, aged 22–85, to help. We tested 14 bestselling bed-in-a-box mattresses, spending at least a fortnight on each sample, and compared first impressions by sitting, bouncing and lying down together. Scores covered firmness, breathability, motion isolation and overall comfort; I also used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, dumbbells to measure sinkage, an infrared thermometer and heat pad for cooling, and a glass of water to gauge motion transfer.
Environmental credentials were checked and any models with significant delivery or customer-service complaints were excluded. The mattresses will be donated to two charities.
