LED face masks have surged in popularity despite being among the priciest at-home beauty devices. They claim to reduce fine lines, calm redness or target spots, and some combine different light wavelengths to broaden the effects. Past research from the 1990s supports light therapy’s role in wound healing, acne and skin rejuvenation, but expensive, non-invasive treatments still deserve scrutiny.

To get a clearer picture I spoke to doctors and dermatologists — including Dr Barbara Kubicka, Dr Derrick Phillips and Dr Priya Verma — about which features matter most: bulb quality and quantity, light wavelength and treatment time. Guided by their advice, I tested 13 of the most popular masks for fit, comfort and usability, monitored short-term results after four nightly sessions and then reassessed favourites over several months.

Masks that couldn’t deliver bright, flicker-free light or a comfortable fit were eliminated; some were returned to manufacturers and others donated to a charity supporting people experiencing domestic abuse.
