Air pollution — including industrial emissions, exhaust fumes and dust — is one of the gravest environmental health risks in the UK, with densely populated and low‑income areas worst affected. While outdoor air is hard to control, an effective air purifier can sanitise indoor air by drawing it through filters that capture dust, pollens, pet dander and fumes (VOCs).

I tested 10 popular models and selected seven standouts. For each unit I degraded the indoor air (by cooking, DIY or lighting a wood fire) until a monitor showed PM2.5 above 5μg/m³, then ran the purifier on its highest fan setting and recorded the PM2.5 reduction after an hour.

I also measured electricity use, noise levels, steady performance on low or auto settings, and considered design and extra functions such as dehumidification, ionisation and app control. Some test units were donated to the Cat Action Trust 1977.
