Benjamin Sesko lined up by Barcelona as backup if Alvarez deal fails
Barcelona have identified Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko as a potential target should their pursuit of Julian Alvarez collapse. The La Liga champions need a prolific forward to replace Robert Lewandowski, but negotiations with Atletico Madrid over Alvarez have proved extremely difficult.
Alvarez sits at the top of Barcelona's wishlist after Lewandowski's confirmed departure. The Argentine moved to Atletico from Manchester City for €75 million in August 2024 and has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances for the capital club, following 36 in 103 matches in England.
Last season he contributed 20 goals and nine assists in 49 games, including 10 goals in 15 Champions League appearances, and Barcelona believe he would flourish alongside Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Fermin Lopez and Anthony Gordon under Hansi Flick. Atletico are opposed to selling to a domestic rival and reportedly dismissed an initial offer just over €100m, prompting sporting director Deco to prepare alternatives.
