A preview trip to Japan offered another look at Game Freak's upcoming action RPG ahead of its August 4 launch and revealed details about protagonist Emma and the Blight. Game director Kota Furushima explained the Blight, born from the beast of reincarnation, corrupts all living things into Malefacts, affecting plants, animals and even Emma; their dog Koo is one as well.

Emma can summon a vine from her arm to cross large distances and climb, abilities granted by the Blight, but she has no memories or emotions. Survivors reject and fear her, treating her like a "corrupted husk," and Furushima said it is unclear whether the Blight caused her condition or if she was like that before becoming a Malefact.

Portraying an emotionless protagonist is a difficult task, and Game Freak has opted to use voice actors. Emma is voiced by Yui Ishikawa, whom Furushima praises; her credits include 2B in Nier: Automata and roles in Guilty Gear Strive, Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Monster Hunter Rise Starbreak.
