Spoiler warning: make sure you've seen House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1 before reading on. The opening episode brings the Battle of the Gullet to the screen, and it's every bit as bloody and brutal as expected. The show makes several changes from George R.

R. Martin's Fire and Blood, which is framed as a historical account compiled from varying reports, so not all differences are surprising. Scenes are reshaped: in the show Jacaerys Velaryon locks Rhaenyra inside her rooms with a guard when she vows to fly into battle, a detail not found in the book where the Queen is not involved.

Lord Corlys Velaryon and his men sail through the rocky part of the ocean on screen—initially working until Sharako Lohar follows them through—but Martin does not go into great detail about how the battle was waged in his account. Several deaths are handled differently.
