Barcelona pay €80m for Anthony Gordon as transfers are graded
Newcastle have shifted their approach after a disruptive run with Alexander Isak, and moved quickly to sell another unsettled forward for a substantial fee. Gordon is hardworking, versatile and talented, but he has never done enough for club or country to suggest he is worth £69m.
The bigger test for the Magpies is spending the money wisely; they wasted Isak’s fee, cannot offer Champions League football after a 12th-placed finish, and Gordon’s desire to leave under increasingly disinterested Saudi Arabian owners makes it harder to attract top recruits.
Grade: B- For Barcelona the signing is a worrying sign. Having only just repaired their finances, their first big move is an €80m purchase, and while Gordon can play across the front three and is a relentless presser — traits Hansi Flick values — the club look to have overpaid.
