Bad Bunny sparks UK Latino moment as 100,000 line up
Construction is under way at the Seven Sisters Latin Village in north London, where the market — a centre for the British Latino community — is building a replica of La Casita, the small pink house featured in Bad Bunny’s stage set. La Casita became familiar to millions after the Super Bowl half-time show, when Benito Martínez Ocasio brought a live audience of 128 million and offered a pluralistic, anti-Trumpian take on what it meant to be American.
More than 30 of his songs have been streamed over a billion times, and he performs in Spanish — a barrier that has historically limited prospects in English-speaking countries. Still, about 100,000 people will pack Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for two gigs this weekend, making them the largest Spanish-language shows in UK history.
Latino organisations hope to use the concerts to raise recognition in Britain, where the census has no Latino category.
