Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation has divided viewers, and changes to Toph Beifong's character, played by Miya Cech, have drawn particular scrutiny from longtime fans. The original animated series earned its status by embracing characters' rough edges rather than softening them, and Toph's arrival in Book Two is a key example of that strength.

More than two decades on, Toph Beifong remains, for many, the franchise's greatest character. Book One introduced Aang, Katara, and Sokka, and they were compelling on their own. Book Two is where the series truly deepened, though, and Toph — who burst onto the show like a wrecking ball — completed Team Avatar.

Her sarcasm, stubbornness, and blunt honesty balanced the group's compassion, protectiveness, and humor, and she quickly became the perfect teacher for Aang by pushing him to stand his ground and listen before acting.
