The Avatar franchise is enjoying renewed attention: a sequel film leaked earlier this year, a movie release is planned for later in the year, a new sequel series called Seven Havens is in development, and the second season of the live-action show arrives on Netflix later this month.

Another entry in that push is Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, a 1v1 2D fighter I played at Summer Game Fest. The starting roster is small—eight playable characters drawn from both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra—each using their bending or combat style in distinct ways.

Aang favors aerial mobility with his airbending, Toph manipulates the battlefield with earthbending, and Sokka, without bending, operates as a fierce rushdown character. Characters are animated in a style that evokes the shows, with fluid motion that feels satisfying to use.
