Avatar co-creator says AAA game wasn’t canceled, teases July update
After the upcoming film leaked online, reports emerged that Paramount Games had canceled a AAA Avatar action-RPG being developed at Saber Interactive. Paramount and Saber announced the project in 2024; it was billed as a new-story entry set thousands of years in the past, letting players assume a “never-before-seen Avatar,” master all four elements, and engage in dynamic combat alongside companions.
Avatar co-creator Bryan Konietzko pushed back on that narrative in an Instagram post, saying the game “wasn’t 'canceled.'” He acknowledged a major setback — calling it a reset — and added, “Did it experience a big setback? Yep. These things are not easy (none of this is).
Will it ever happen? Hopefully.” Konietzko also promised more news at San Diego Comic‑Con, which runs July 23–26. The game's situation resembles what happened with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, announced in 2023.
