Bungie confirmed mass layoffs as part of a company restructuring. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filed with the state of Washington lists at least 292 employees being let go, with a separation date of July 9. Recent estimates put the studio’s headcount around 800, down from a peak near 1,300 a few years ago, suggesting the team may now number roughly 500 or fewer — just over a third of its size when Sony purchased it for $3.6 billion.

The cuts reach across departments and disciplines. Former cinematics director John Ebenger said the entire cinematic organization was included, and impacted employees shared messages on social media and LinkedIn as they face a difficult hiring market for game developers.

PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst told staff the reduction affects a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members, and said the decision followed months of review of the studio’s direction, priorities and role within the broader portfolio.
