Arsenal head of sports science exits after internal review
Tom Allen, the long-serving head of sports science and performance, is set to leave the Emirates Stadium after an extensive internal review into the squad's fitness protocols. Allen joined from Aston Villa in 2017 and ends a nine-year spell that bridged the final days of Arsene Wenger's era and the entirety of Mikel Arteta’s reign.
The move follows the surprise sacking of head of medical Dr. Zafar Iqbal last month and comes amid a wider shake-up of the performance department. Arteta brought in Spanish physiotherapist Joaquín Acedo to lead a comprehensive independent review of the club’s injury record and preventative strategies.
Sam Wilson, the lead physical performance coach, is also leaving after a notable 12-year stint and is expected to continue his career with a club in Europe.
