Arnold Schwarzenegger broke out as a leading man in 1982 playing Conan the Barbarian, and more than four decades later he is set to return to that role in King Conan. Mission: Impossible impresario Christopher McQuarrie will write and direct the new film. After decades stuck in development hell, the project will focus on the last days of the legendary warrior.

Schwarzenegger has likened the film to Unforgiven and praised McQuarrie’s understanding of Robert E. Howard and Frank Frazetta, and he has suggested bringing John Milius, who co-wrote and directed the original, on as a producer. The original Conan the Barbarian is set in the Hyborian Age.

Schwarzenegger’s Conan, a native of Cimmeria whose tribe was massacred when he was a boy, becomes a slave, then a gladiator, then a warrior who wins his freedom.
