When Operation Flashpoint launched in June 2001 it stood out as one of the earliest military simulators and as an open-world experience before the term was common. Its combined-arms warfare played out across massive, freely explorable islands; players could drive tanks, fly helicopters, command squads or even lie down.

The game was janky and ugly and harder than a steel-plated honey badger, but it also felt light years ahead of its time. Now 25 years on, the title — now ArmA: Cold War Assault — is getting a remastered edition. Bohemia Interactive is rebuilding the original Poseidon engine to add features such as widescreen support and improved compatibility for modern machines, and has released a demo that offers a self-contained slice of the full remaster along with a sanctioned asset pack that fans are free to study, modify and build new Arma content from.

Alongside the remaster, Bohemia has published the full engine source code on GitHub.
