Ari Aster says he has written a prequel script for Hereditary. Speaking at The American Cinematheque’s annual Bleak Week, he said, "I wrote a prequel to this." He added, "It never feels like the right time. It's a prequel, not a sequel so I don't know where this goes." Hereditary debuted in 2018 as a supernatural thriller that explored grief and features Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne and Alex Wolff.

Backed by A24, the film earned a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $90.4 million on a modest $10 million budget. Aster pushed back on the label "elevated horror," saying, "I hate the term elevated horror, especially because it's sort of a box that I was put in and horror fans took umbrage." He also described working in a tradition of classics, noting, "The film is very, almost self-consciously nodding to Rosemary's Baby at the end of the film.
