Apple TV’s 10-part Cape Fear, a new project from Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, returns to the novel The Executioners for a third adaptation and updates the material for the present moment. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson play married lawyers Anna and Tom Bowden.

Anna once defended Max Cady (Javier Bardem), advised a plea that sent him to prison for 17 years, and later married the prosecutor on the case; when new evidence leads to Cady’s release, their lives are upended and a tense cat-and-mouse unfolds. The series upends expectations by casting serious doubt on Cady’s guilt.

Though Anna remains convinced he is guilty, the show presents compelling evidence that he may not have killed his wife and unborn child, even as disturbing incidents — including the mutilation of Anna’s son Zach (Joe Anders) — coincide with Cady’s return. Cape Fear leans on surprise and cliffhangers to propel viewers through its ten episodes, reshaping familiar material into a psychological thriller with fresh twists.
